Wave function single configuration

In the ground state of helium, the electron wave function in configuration space can be represented by a single determinant... [Pg.135]

The wave function for the elechonic structure can in principle be any of the constructions employed in electronic structure theoiy. The prefened choice in this context is a wave funchons that can be classified as single and multi-configurational, and for the latter type only complete active space (CAS) wave... [Pg.230]

In practice, each CSF is a Slater determinant of molecular orbitals, which are divided into three types inactive (doubly occupied), virtual (unoccupied), and active (variable occupancy). The active orbitals are used to build up the various CSFs, and so introduce flexibility into the wave function by including configurations that can describe different situations. Approximate electronic-state wave functions are then provided by the eigenfunctions of the electronic Flamiltonian in the CSF basis. This contrasts to standard FIF theory in which only a single determinant is used, without active orbitals. The use of CSFs, gives the MCSCF wave function a structure that can be interpreted using chemical pictures of electronic configurations [229]. An interpretation in terms of valence bond sti uctures has also been developed, which is very useful for description of a chemical process (see the appendix in [230] and references cited therein). [Pg.300]

The adiabatic functions are characterized by two interesting features (1) they depend only on the angular coordinate (but not on the radial coordinate) and (2) they are not single valued in configuration space because when

adiabatic wave functions back to their... [Pg.715]

Configuration Interaction (or electron correlation) adds to the single determinant of the Hartree-Fock wave function a linear combination of determinants that play the role of atomic orbitals. This is similar to constructing a molecular orbital as a linear combination of atomic orbitals. Like the LCAO approximation. Cl calculations determine the weighting of each determinant to produce the lowest energy ground state (see SCFTechnique on page 43). [Pg.38]

For some systems a single determinant (SCFcalculation) is insufficient to describe the electronic wave function. For example, square cyclobutadiene and twisted ethylene require at least two configurations to describe their ground states. To allow several configurations to be used, a multi-electron configuration interaction technique has been implemented in HyperChem. [Pg.235]

HyperChem uses single determinant rather than spin-adapted wave functions to form a basis set for the wave functions in a configuration interaction expansion. That is, HyperChem expands a Cl wave function, in a linear combination of single Slater determ in ants... [Pg.235]

This is perhaps the easiest method to understand. It is based on the variational principle (Appendix B), analogous to the HF method. The trial wave function is written as a linear combination of determinants with the expansion coefficients determined by requiring that the energy should be a minimum (or at least stationary), a procedure known as Configuration Interaction (Cl). The MOs used for building the excited Slater determinants are taken from a Hartree-Fock calculation and held fixed. Subscripts S, D, T etc. indicate determinants which are singly, doubly, triply etc. excited relative to the... [Pg.101]

Just as the single determinant MO wave function may be improved by including excited determinants, the simple VB-HL function may also be improved by adding terms which correspond to higher energy configurations for the fragments, in this case ionic structures. [Pg.196]
