However, the laws and regulatory programmes regarding water quality cope with most of the problems and legislation generally protects the population in developed countries, even when scarcity forces the use of non-conventional water resources. Outbreaks of water-borne diseases in these countries are more linked to intense rainfall events, mostly to those that follow drought periods, rather than to drought itself [1 ]. [Pg.148]

This work was supported by NSF Grant No. DAR-8003523. Early work on the toxins was supported by the New Hampshire Water Resources Research Center of the University of New Hampshire, Grant No. AO-47NH, from the Office of Water Research and Technology, United States Department of the Interior as authorized under the Water Research and Development Act of 1978, Public Law 95-467. We also thank Dr. William J. Adelman, Jr., NINCDS, Woods Hole, for performing the voltage-clamp experiments Kurt Auger for superior work in biochemistry and Toshinori Hoshi for studies on the crayfish axons. [Pg.405]

Potential problems arising from land contamination have previously been addressed by UK law. For example, Section 161 of the Water Resources Act 1991 refers to situations where any poisonous, noxious or polluting matter or any solid waste matter is likely to enter. . . any controlled waters , which clearly includes the sense of one type of land contamination problem. The concept of contaminated land has also been referred to in UK law—for example, the Leasehold Reform, Housing and Urban Development Act 1994 gave the Urban Regeneration Agency (which became known as English Partnerships) specific powers to fund the reclamation of derelict, contaminated or un-used land. But Part IIA contains the first definition of contaminated land in UK law. [Pg.25]

Other fields related to hydrology by virtue of then-strong connection to water resources include watershed management, potable water supply, wastewater treatment, irrigation, water law, political science (water policy), economics (costs of water projects), drainage, flood control, hydropower, salinity control and treatment, erosion and aspects of sediment control, navigation, lake and inland fisheries, and recreational uses of water. [Pg.1012]

Over the past few decades, conventional agriculture has caused an almost global contamination of grormdwater with residues of fertilisers (especially nitrate) and pesticides. The protection of water resources, not necessarily drinking water alone, is one more aspect to be considered when biodegradable polymers are released into the environment in vast amounts. Finally, national laws and regulations for drinking water have to be followed. [Pg.94]

The recent law on production is applicable to all forms of the production electricity from any renewable source, or from recycled thermal effluents. However, in the early days up to the present, the speediest and most exciting reply has been in the area of water resources. [Pg.11]
