Secondary Treatment A wastewater treatment process used to convert dissolved or suspended materials into a form more readily separated from the water being treated. Usually the process follows primary treatment by sedimentation. The process commonly is a type of biological treatment process followed by secondary clarifiers that allow the solids to settle out from the water being treated. A schematic flow diagram of a wastewater treatment plant is shown in Figs. 9.9 to 9.12. In primary physical treatment, solid material is separated from the liquid by screens, settling tanks, and skimming devices. This removes about 50 percent of the pollutants. The remaining organic material is subjected to biological treatment.

Primary treatment uses a settling pond to allow most hydrocarbons and suspended solids to separate from the wastewater. The solids drift to the bottom of the pond, hydrocarbons are skimmed off the top, and oily sludge is removed. Difficult oil-in-water emulsions are heated to expedite separation. 

Artola-Garicano et al. [27] compared their measured removals of AHTN and HHCB [24] to the predicted removal of these compounds by the wastewater treatment plant model Simple Treat 3.0. Simple Treat is a fugacity-based, nine-box model that breaks the treatment plant process into influent, primary settler, primary sludge, aeration tank, solid/liquid separator, effluent, and waste sludge and is a steady-state, nonequilibrium model [27]. The model inputs include information on the emission scenario of the FM, FM physical-chemical properties, and FM biodegradation rate in activated sludge. 

The septic tank system is the oldest and most widely used anaerobic treatment system. It was introduced at the end of the 19th century and is composed of a tank and an absorption field. The primary function of the tank is the biological digestion of waste organic matter under anaerobic conditions, followed by the separation of solids from the incoming wastewater.
