This is a remarkable shift in opinion, for to a large extent Frazier had merely systematized beliefs shared by virtually all African Americans at the time. Indeed, the proposition that slavery had cruelly stunted black family life was one of the few things upon which Booker T. Washington and W. E. B. Du Bois agreed. 

Yet Bond also wanted to document how, even when the federal government turned its back on land redistribution, blacks like Isom and John Wilson had acquired property and become shifty (resourceful) farmers. Indeed, by 1910 at least zi8,ooo blacks—about one black farmer in four—owned land. This was a phenomenal achievement. To Bond, the Wilsons represented all that was admirable among black southerners they were the acme of self-help in the tradition of Booker T. Washington. The entire family, wrote Bond, is a good example of what a Negro owner family can become—unsophisticated, of course, but honest, industrious, ambitious people. ...
