This response is demonstrated above for Vitamin E USP (36), which is a liquid at room temperature but may form a glass on rapid cooling. In this case the step change in baseline corresponding to the glass transition is clearly visible (Figure 1.12).

According to the US Pharmacopoeia (USP), IIU of vitamin E equals Img all rac a-tocopheryl acetate, 0.67mg RRR-a-tocopherol, or 0.74 mg RRR-a-toco-pheryl acetate. These conversions were estimated on the relative biologic activities of the various forms when tested in the rat assay for vitamin E deficiency, the fetal resorption assay. These USP lUs are currently used in labeling vitamin E supplements and food for-tificants. It should be noted that the current RDA does not use vitamin E USP units but rather the recommendation for adults is set at 15 mg of RRR-a-tocopherol or IR-a-tocopherols. Most foods contain RRR-a-tocopherol naturally, but foods that have been fortified with vitamin E contain the synthetic form, e.g., fortified breakfast cereals. If the amount of vitamin E on the label is given in international units, then this must be multiplied by the factors given in Table 2 to obtain the amount of 2R-/3-tocopherol. 

X5lenol is an important starting material for insecticides, xylenol—formaldehyde resins, disinfectants, wood preservatives, and for synthesis of a-tocopherol (vitamin E) (258) and i7/-a-tocopherol acetate (USP 34-50/kg, October 1994). The Bayer insecticide Methiocarb is manufactured by reaction of 3,5-x5lenol with methylsulfenyl chloride to yield 4-methylmercapto-3,5-xylenol, followed by reaction with methyl isocyanate (257). Disinfectants and preservatives are produced by chlorination to 4-chloro- and 2,4-dich1oro-3,5-dimethylpheno1 (251). 

The recommended daily allowance for vitamin E ranges from 10 international units (1 lU = 1 mg all-rac-prevent vitamin E deficiency in humans. High levels enhance immune responses in both animals and humans. Requirements for animals vary from 3 USP units /kg diet for hamsters to 70 lU /kg diet for cats (13). The complete metaboHsm of vitamin E in animals or humans is not known. The primary excreted breakdown products of a-tocopherol in the body are gluconurides of tocopheronic acid (27) (Eig. 6). These are derived from the primary metaboUte a-tocopheryl quinone (9) (see Eig. 2) (44,45).

Note that the USP 28 describes vitamin E as comprising d- or uf/-alpha tocopherol, d- or d/-alpha tocopheryl acetate, or d- or uf/-alpha tocopheryl acid succinate. However, the PhEur 2005 describes alpha tocopherol and alpha tocopheryl acetate in separate monographs.
