Viscosity of asphalt

Figures 6 and 7 show viscosities of asphalt and sulfur-asphalt as a function of shear rate at 90° and 25°C. These plots show that the asphalts and sulfur-asphalts are Newtonian at 90°C. At 25°C the asphalts and sulfur-asphalt exhibit some non-Newtonian behavior. The degree of non-Newtonian behavior does not appear to be affected by sulfur concentration. The viscosity of asphalt is a measure of its flow characteristics. It is generally the most important controlling property for manufacture and for selection to meet a particular application. [Pg.347]

Another very important application of surface science in the petroleum industry that has recently been receiving much attention is the creation of oil-in-water asphaltic emulsions (asphalt dispersed in a brine continuous phase) which are used to pave roads (44). The idea is to decrease the viscosity of asphalt, while at the same time avoiding the use of gasoline. The latter is presently... [Pg.265]

This test method covers procedures for the determination of viscosity of asphalt (bitumen) by vacuum capillary viscometers at 140 F (60 C). It is applicable to materials having viscosities in the range from 0.036 to over 200 000 P. [Pg.327]
