Allylic acetates are widely used. The oxidative addition of allylic acetates to Pd(0) is reversible, and their reaction must be carried out in the presence of bases. An important improvement in 7r-allylpalladium chemistry has been achieved by the introduction of allylic carbonates. Carbonates are highly reactive. More importantly, their reactions can be carried out under neutral con-ditions[13,14]. Also reactions of allylic carbamates[14], allyl aryl ethers[6,15], and vinyl epoxides[16,17] proceed under neutral conditions without addition of bases. [Pg.292]

The best procedures for 3-vinylation or 3-arylation of the indole ring involve palladium intermediates. Vinylations can be done by Heck reactions starting with 3-halo or 3-sulfonyloxyindoles. Under the standard conditions the active catalyst is a Pd(0) species which reacts with the indole by oxidative addition. A major con.sideration is the stability of the 3-halo or 3-sulfonyloxyindoles and usually an EW substituent is required on nitrogen. The range of alkenes which have been used successfully is quite broad and includes examples with both ER and EW substituents. Examples are given in Table 11.3. An alkene which has received special attention is methyl a-acetamidoacrylate which is useful for introduction of the tryptophan side-chain. This reaction will be discussed further in Chapter 13. [Pg.109]

In general, acryUc ester monomers copolymerize readily with each other or with most other types of vinyl monomers by free-radical processes. The relative ease of copolymerization for 1 1 mixtures of acrylate monomers with other common monomers is presented in Table 7. Values above 25 indicate that good copolymerization is expected. Acrylic Resins. The first synthetic polymer denture material, used throughout much of the 20th century, was based on the discovery of vulcanised mbber in 1839. Other polymers explored for denture and other dental uses have included ceUuloid, phenolformaldehyde resins, and vinyl chloride copolymers. Polystyrene, polycarbonates, polyurethanes, and acryHc resins have also been used for dental polymers. Because of the unique combination of properties, eg, aesthetics and ease of fabrication, acryHc resins based on methyl methacrylate and its polymer and/or copolymers have received the most attention since their introduction in 1937. However, deficiencies include excessive polymerization shrinkage and poor abrasion resistance. Most of over six million dentures produced annually in the USA are made of acrylics (PMMAs) that includes full dentures, partial dentures, teeth, denture reliners, fillings and miscellaneous uses. Plastics have been edging into the dental market for over a half century. Even before the introduction of acrylics to the dental profession in 1937, nitrocellulose, phenol-formaldehyde and vinyl plastics were used as denture base materials. Results, however, were not wholly satisfactory because these plastics did not have the proper requisites of dental plastics. Since then, PMMAs have kept their lead as the most useful dental plastics, although many new plastics have appeared and are still being tested. Predominance of PMMAs is not surprising, for they are reasonably strong, have exceptional optical properties, low water absorption and solubility, and excellent dimensional stability.
