Near the site of the Vietnam Memorial is the statue of a small squad of soldiers carrying a wounded comrade. This statue was the original proposal by a good many veterans organizations who had opposed the present wall as a fitting monument. [Pg.432]

It is medicinally used from Korea to Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. In Korea, the plant is used as an aphrodisiac for males and the elderly. In Japan, a decoction of the root is drunk to treat cough, invigorate, and treat tuberculosis. In Taiwan, the plant is an external remedy for snake bites. In Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam, the roots are used to treat bronchitis, amnesia, and to stimulate memory and urination. The antitussive property is very probably owed to polygalasaponins, which are known to abound in the plant (24-26). It would be interesting to know whether the tonic properties mentioned here are owed to serotoninergic mechanisms. What is the alkaloidal content of this herb ... [Pg.92]

Reduced hippocampal volume is a well-known hallmark of PTSD. Initial magnetic resonance imaging studies determined smaller hippocampal volumes in Vietnam veterans with PTSD and patients with abuse-related PTSD compared with controls (Bremner et al., 1997). Therefore, severity of trauma and memory impairments were related to the decrease in hippocampal volumes. However, reduced hippocampal volume has not been observed in children with PTSD (De Beilis et al., 1999). Additionally, proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy investigations further demonstrated a reduction of Ihe levels of N-acetyl aspartate (NAA), a marker of neuronal integrity, in the hippocampus of adult patients with PTSD (Villarreal et al., 2002). Hippocampal volume reduction in PTSD likely reflects a neurotoxic effect... [Pg.678]
