Acid rain is caused primarily by sulfur dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas. Sulfur is an impurity in these fuels for example, coal typically contains 2-3% by weight sulfur.1M Other sources of sulfur include the industrial smelting of metal sulfide ores to produce the elemental metal and, in some parts of the world, volcanic eruptions. When fossils fuels are burned, sulfur is oxidized to sulfur dioxide (SO2) and trace amounts of sulfur trioxide (SC>3)J21 The release of sulfur dioxide and sulfur trioxide emissions to the atmosphere is the major source of acid rain. These gases combine with oxygen and water vapor to form a fine mist of sulfuric acid that settles on land, on vegetation, and in the ocean. [Pg.47]

Sally, you scream. There is no response, except perhaps a barely audible laughter. You trod through fields of strange vegetation surrounded by puffs of mist. It seems you are floating from one spatial plane to another. Then the chain becomes tight. You can go no further. [Pg.150]

Acid mist and dew is another cause for damage to vegetation. Research has been intensified over the last years to a great degree. [Pg.590]

Control Spray fruit trees with dormant oil to kill overwintering eggs in garden or greenhouse rinse plants with water and mist daily to suppress reproduction of mites release predatory mites Metaseiulus occiden-talis on fruit trees, Phytoseiulus persimilis or similar species on vegetables, strawberries, and flowers spray insecticidal soap, pyrethrin, or neem as a last resort, spray infested plants with avermectins. [Pg.308]

It s not nearly as magical as you might think. Cooking spray is just regular vegetable oil in spray form. To get it to spray out a fine mist, an emulsifier is added, and the ctin needs something to act as a propellant (usually alcohol, CO2, or propane). [Pg.276]

In the last two sections we considered hydrometeors, drops and ice particles in clouds, fog, mist and precipitation. This section deals with the formation of interfacial water, either from water vapor (dew and frost) or from hydrometeors (rime and interception). These forms of atmospheric water need the contact with a surface soils and vegetation but also artificial surfaces. Some meteorologists classify these phenomena as belonging to precipitation - we will not (see Chapter 4.4 for more details). Precipitation is physically a sedimentation process due to gravitational force see Fig. 2.40 for different deposition processes. [Pg.165]

The different types of dispersed systems are classified depending on the nature of the dispersed phase and the continuous phase. A solid or liquid dispersed in a gas is termed an aerosol smoke is a common example of the solid-in-air system. A liquid-in-air system is a mist or fog. Mayonnaise is an emulsion in which a liquid (vegetable oil) is dispersed in another liquid (water). Paints and inks are colloidal sols or dispersions and consist of solid particles dispersed in a liquid. [Pg.216]
