Variations on a Theme

The dehalogenation reaction is a variant of the E2 where the H and L are now halogens, commonly bromine, and the base has been replaced by iodide. The orbital alignment restrictions are the same as for the E2 reaction  [Pg.201]

The reverse of the aldol reaction (Section 8.5.5) is an ElcB type of fragmentation in which the leaving group is an enolate  [Pg.201]

Additional conjugation may not change the system significantly (the principle of vinylogy. Section 1.9.2). Vinylogous paths are often denoted with a prime mark. [Pg.201]

The Sn2 reaction is just a vinylogous Sn2 reaction, where the nucleophile attacks a pi bond adjacent to the leaving group  [Pg.202]

However, the overlap restrictions now include two more atoms and therefore may be more difficult to achieve. For the Sn2 the Nu, p orbital of carbon attacked, and C-L bond should be coplanar (often syn). This variant is found mostly in rigid systems where the C=C-C-L is locked into the proper alignment. Freely rotating systems go by the normal Sn2 reaction unless the Sn2 site is sterically blocked, and the Sn2 site is open. Triply bonded systems C=C-C-L (propargyl leaving groups) do not have as critical an alignment problem one of the two pi bonds will be close to the correct position. [Pg.202]

1 Electroreductive Cyclization Electron Deficient Alkene/Carbonyl [Pg.8]

As indicated, these transformations lead to the formation of a new sigma bond between two formally electron-deficient centers [4,22,23], in this instance between the )9-carbon of an electron-deficient alkene and a carbonyl carbon. [Pg.8]

Overall, the process requires the consumption of two electrons and two protons. The structure and acidity of effective proton donors vary from mineral to carbon acids often, a simple dialkyl malonate is effective. It is easy to monitor current consumption using a simple, commercially available coulometer [3,4]. [Pg.8]

When cyclization occurs between an electron-deficient allene and a ketone, as is the case with 27, butenolides are produced [19]. Given the importance of this functional group in cardiac glycoside natural products, the simplicity of the starting materials, and the facility of the cathodic cyclization, it may be worth noting the opportunity to utilize this transformation in the construction of these natural products. [Pg.9]

Toffoli and Margolus [tofF86] point out that what appears on the macroscopic scale is a good simulation of surface tension, in which the boundaries behave as though they are stretched membranes exerting a pull proportional to their curvature. Vichniac adds that the behavior of such twisted majority rules actually simulates the Allen-Cahn equation of surface tension rather accurately  [Pg.129]

The rest of this chapter is a variation on a theme introduced in Chapter 9 the use of equilibrium constants to calculate the equilibrium composition of solutions of acids, bases, and salts. We shall see how to predict the pH of solutions of weak acids and bases and how to calculate the extent of deprotonation of a weak acid and the extent of protonation of a weak base. We shall also see how to calculate the pH of a solution of a salt in which the cation or anion of the salt may itself be a weak acid or base. [Pg.534]

Examples of approaches followed by a small selection of the major RM developers are provided below and summarized in Table 3.2. It must be emphasized that these assignments are based on the author s interpretation of approaches described in the literature that placing into one of the approaches defined in this paper is not always feasible due to cross-over between different modes, fusion of ideas from one and another, elimination of steps, selective choices of parameters, modification of parameters, and streamlining of the overall procedure. Variations on a theme are unavoidable. In assigning certification approaches, the numbers refer to the approaches defined above multiple numbers indicate a blending of two or more modes with a asterisk indicating the author s assignment of the dominant mode of certification. [Pg.58]

As one tries to write down an analysis of the developments in the block polymers area, one realizes very soon that it is going to consist of a series of variations on a theme a theme which is the increasing ly stronger reality, in our everyday scientific life, of what can be now really called "the molecular engineering of polymers properties", i.e. the possibility to control, through precise (although sometimes small) modifications of molecular structures, the final bulk properties and macroscopic behaviour of polymeric materials. In other words, one deals there with a very acti ve version of the studies on structure-properties inter relationships, a question which by the way has always been a focal point among the many diversified interests of Professor Mark. [Pg.307]

Finally, if we take a fruit fly and knock out one of its Hox genes and then replace it with the corresponding human Hox gene, we get a perfectly normal fruit fly. As Matt Ridley has phrased it Flies and people are just variations on a theme of how to build a body that was laid down in some worm-like creature in the Cambrian period. This is a remarkable example of the underlying unity of living organisms. [Pg.189]

This chapter presents computational studies of organic reactions that involve anions. These reactions are usually not grouped together in textbooks. However, these reactions are fundamentally variations on a theme. Anions, acting as nucleophiles, can attack sp carbon atoms we call these as nucleophilic substitution reactions that follow either the S l or 8 2 mechanism. Reactions where the nucleophile attacks sp or sp carbon atoms are addition reactions. The 1,2- and... [Pg.373]
