Vanadyl trichloride

Vanadyl trichloride (VOCI3) [7727-18-6] M 173.3, m-79.5°, b 124.5-125.5°/744mm, 127.16°/760mm, d 1.854, d 1.811. Should be lemon yellow in colour. If red it may contain VCI4 and CI2. Fractionally distil and then redistil over metallic Na but be careful to leave some residue because the residue can become EXPLOSIVE in the presence of the metal USE A SAFETY SHIELD and avoid contact with moisture. It readily hydrolyses to vanadic acid and HCl. Store in a tightly closed container or in sealed ampoules under N2. [Inorg Synth 1 106 1939, 4 80 1953.]... [Pg.496]

Vanadyl trichloride, VOCl , is a greenish yellow mobile liquid prepared hy the action of chlorine on the oxides VO and V202 or by reducing V2Oa in an atmosphere of chlorine. It fumes in moist air, and when a small amount of water is added it turns blood red due to the formation of vanadic m ivanadic acid dissolves, giving a clear yellow solution. When reduced, it yields vanadyl dichloride, VOOI2, green tablets, deliquescent vanadyl monochloride, VOCl, brown powder, insoluble in water and divanadyl monochloride, yellow crystal line powder. [Pg.219]

VANADYL TRICHLORIDE (7727-18-6) Reacts with moisture in air, forming hydrogen chloride fumes. Reacts with water, forming hydrochloric acid. Air contact causes formation of corrosive hydrogen chloride fumes. Reacts violently with many substances, including bases, sodium, potassium. Aqueous solution incompatible with sulfuric acid, alkalis, ammonia, aliphatic amines, alkanolamines, alkylene oxides, amides, epichlorohydrin, organic anhydrides, isocyanates, nitromethane, vinyl acetate. Attacks metals in the presence of moisture. [Pg.1222]
