Vagueness argument

The reviews by Rondestvedt (1960, 1976) are outdated so far as the mechanism of the Meerwein reaction is concerned. This statement is substantiated by Rondestvedt s own comment in his 1976 review (p. 226) in which he states that the generally accepted mechanism involves the aryl radical. .., though the manner of its formation and its subsequent reaction are still controversial . Meerwein et al., in their original paper (1939), expressed the opinion that the reaction is ionic in nature. A radical mechanism was first proposed by Koelsch in 1943 (see also Koelsch and Bockelheide, 1944). He received immediate support from Bergmann et al. (1944) and Bergmann and Weizmann (1944), in spite of the fact that Koelsch s claim was based on rather uncertain and vague arguments.

In one actual case, a man used LSD and, within an hour thereafter, killed a store owner. The defendant claims that he awoke one morning and took five to six Fioricet tablets, went out and purchased two bags of heroin, and took cocaine hourly for five hours. Then, for the first time in six years, he took six hits of LSD. His memory afterward was vague, until he realized that he was in police custody. He apparently entered a store, had an argument with the owner, and killed him. People witnessing the events captured and held the defendant until the police arrived. The man was found guilty of murder. 

Consequently, risk managers, as transmitters of information to the public, want to avoid vagueness and press for precise statements (without uncertainty), as otherwise they must decide and act under uncertainty. One task of the exposure assessment step is to articulate the main arguments for restrictions with respect to the interpretation together and propose what could and should be done to enhance the scientific basis for a refined analysis that would result in less uncertainty. 

It will be observed that Einstein s theories are largely based on ideas derived directly from known facts. They are not philosophical discussions based on vague speculations, but are examples of supremely logical argument from reliable premises.
