A solution of 1.05 M diborane in THF (25 ml, 26 mraol) was added slowly to a stirred suspension of 3-acetyl-5-hydroxy-2-methylindole (1.0 g, 5.3 mmol) in THF (10 ml). After hydrogen evolution ceased, the mixture was heated at reflux for I h, cooled and poured into acetone (75 ml). The mixture was heated briefly to boiling and then evaporated in vacuo. The residue was heated with methanol (50ml) for 20min. The solution was concentrated and 3NHC1 (40ml) was added. The mixture was extracted with ether and the extracts dried (MgSO ) and evaporated to yield a yellow oil. Vacuum sublimation or recrystallization yielded pure product (0.76 g, 82%). [Pg.151]

Niobium Penta.fIuoride, Niobium pentafluoride is prepared best by direct fluorination of the metal with either fluorine or anhydrous hydrofluoric acid at 250—300°C. The volatile NbF is condensed in a pyrex or quartz cold trap, from which it can be vacuum-sublimed at 120°C to yield colorless monoclinic crystals. Titanium tetraiodide can be prepared by direct combination of the elements at 150—200°C it can be made by reaction of gaseous hydrogen iodide with a solution of titanium tetrachloride in a suitable solvent and it can be purified by vacuum sublimation at 200°C. In the van Arkel method for the preparation of pure titanium metal, the sublimed tetraiodide is decomposed on a tungsten or titanium filament held at ca 1300°C (152). The same color variety is not typical with inorganic insertion/extraction materials blue is a common transmitted color. However, rare-earth diphthalocyanine complexes have been discussed, and these exhibit a wide variety of colors as a function of potential (73—75). Lutetium diphthalocyanine [12369-74-3] has been studied the most. It is an ion-insertion/extraction material that does not fit into any one of the groups herein but has been classed with the organics in reviews. Alkannin occurs in the roots of the plant as the alkah-sensitive ester of angelic acid (62). It may be extracted from the roots by using boiling light petroleum ether. Treatment of this extract with dilute sodium hydroxide gives a blue solution from which the dye is precipitated by the addition of acid. The cmde product is purified by vacuum sublimation (63). If the pump is a filter pump off a high-pressure water supply, its performance will be limited by the temperature of the water because the vapour pressure of water at 10°, 15°, 20° and 25° is 9.2, 12.8, 17.5 and 23.8 mm Hg respectively. The pressure can be measured with an ordinary manometer. For vacuums in the range lO" mm Hg to 10 mm Hg, rotary mechanical pumps (oil pumps) are used and the pressure can be measured with a Vacustat McLeod type gauge. If still higher vacuums are required, for example for high vacuum sublimations, a mercury diffusion pump is suitable. Such a pump can provide a vacuum up to 10" mm Hg. For better efficiencies, the pump can be backed up by a mechanical pump. In all cases, the mercury pump is connected to the distillation apparatus through several traps to remove mercury vapours. These traps may operate by chemical action, for example the use of sodium hydroxide pellets to react with acids, or by condensation, in which case empty tubes cooled in solid carbon dioxide-ethanol or liquid nitrogen (contained in wide-mouthed Dewar flasks) are used. [Pg.12]

Heated with an equal weight of cone H2SO4 at 103-105° for 2-3h, then diluted with four volumes of water, refluxed for Ih, and either steam distd or extracted repeatedly with diethyl ether after cooling to room temperature. The steam distillate was also extracted and evaporated to dryness. (The purification process depends on the much slower sulfonation of 3,5-dimethylphenol than most of its likely contaminants.). Freeze-drying, like all drying processes, is a method to separate liquid water from a wet solid product or from a solution or dispersion of given concentration. However, the main difference is that the liquid water is separated by solidification (i.e., the formation of ice crystals) and subsequent vacuum sublimation instead of evaporation. This allows a drying at subzero temperatures which can be advantageous in case of heat-sensitive products. There are two general applications... [Pg.143]
