Because of the intrinsic importance of aryl-aryl coupling reactions, this field has received considerable attention from academic and industrial chanists for more than hundred years. Since the pioneering work of Pschorr, UUmann, and others [60-62], procedures for the generation of biaryl systems have continuously evolved. Today, unsymmetrical biaryl systems with a variety of functional groups can be accessed, which would have been impossible to prepare only a few decades ago.

A copper-catalyzed synthesis of benzo[f)]thiophenes and benzothiazoles using thiocarboxylic acids as sulfur source and coupling partner in the presence of Cul and 1,10-phenanthroline (1-10 phen) was developed this year (13JOC8898). The reaction proceeds by UUmann-type C—S bond coupling followed by Wittig condensation.
