Immortelle (H. angustifalhm) contains a small amount (0.075-0.2%) of volatile oil, two phthalides (5-methoxy-7-hydroxyphthalide and 5,7-dimethoxyphthaUde), helipyrone, triterpenes (a-amyrin, uvaol, and ursolic acid) and a triterpene lactone (ursolic acid lactone), wax consisting mostly of C31 and C29 -alkanes (ca. 2 1 ratio), flavonoids, P-sitosterol, caffeic acid, and others (list and horhammer). ... 

The family includes 440 species distributed all over the world with centres in China (112 species) and Brasil (75 species). Ilex aquifoliutn is the most abundand species in Central Europe where it may be found in forests, but it is also very popular as ornamental plant in houses and gardens. The poisonous parts are the berries, and to a lesser extent also the leaves they contain ursolic acid, uvaol, jt-amyrin, and a bisnor-monoterpene. Ilex-lactone (12), as well as 27-p-cumaroxy-ursolic acid (13). The South American Ilex paraguariensis contains also coffein and theobromin, and is therefore used as tea. 

Terpenes, especially triterpenes, are major components of extractives from barks (104, 292, 388). Among the most commonly reported major triterpenes are a- and 5-amyrin, betulin, friedelin, cycloartenol lactones, ursolic acid, oleanolic acid, serrantendiols, and sterols (see Chap. 8). 

TTie microbial transformation of ursolic acid (87) by, filamentous fungus Syncephalastrum racemosum CGMCC 3.2500 produced, in low 5aelds, five metabolites [87] 3p,7p,2ip-trihydroxy-m s-12-en-28-oic add (108), 3p,21p-dihydroxy-urs-ll-en-28-oic acid-13-lactone (111), ip,3p,2ip-trihydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic acid (109), 3p,7p,2ip-tri-hydroxy-urs-l-en-28-oic acid-13-lactone (112), and 21-oxo-lp,3p-dihydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic acid (110) (Figure 28.36). In addition, the anh-HCV achvity of compounds 108-112 was evaluated and shown to have no potential in Ihe treatment of HCV.
