Untapped resources

It may be surprising that losses in marine natural product diversity (Table 16.2.5.II) are better documented than for natural products on land, in spite of the difficulty in collecting rare and low-yielding marine species. The paradox finds an explanation. Marine biodiversity has constituted in the past few years the largest untapped resource of novel natural products. The pharmaceutical industry entered the game early, but abandoned the scene soon now it is back to marine natural products, albeit mainly for funding research at universities. In a time of powerful methodologies for the purification and structural elucidation of compounds, this has rapidly secured many unusual marine metabolites of a type never found on land. 

Another vast untapped resource is that of the insect world, and organizations, such as the Institute Nacional de Biodiversidad (INBio) in Costa Rica, are investigating the potential... 

Walker went to Oxford and was in St. Catherine s College, which was in a state of transition in 1960. It had a dynamic head, a historian, Alan Bullock, who wrote famous books. He raised money to convert the St. Catherine s Society into a college. Bullock had been in a grammar school in Northern England and he knew that there were northern grammar school boys who were an untapped resource. 

The versatility of LEMs is clear. From the encapsulation of living cells to the removal of toxic or inhibiting substances, and in their use as a downstream process, liquid emulsion membranes remain a powerful and, as of yet, virtually untapped resource for biochemical engineers. The ability of LEMs to separate and concentrate amino acids demonstrated here gives strength to this observation, and it is anticipated that these systems will enjoy increasing attention in the years to come. 

The marine environment, representing 70% of the Earth s surface, is a vast untapped resource for new chemicals and enzymes, often with characteristics which are considerably different to anything discovered in the terrestrial environment. A major hurdle to the study and exploitation of this resource has been the inaccessibility of the oceans but advances in science and technology are now providing new approaches to isolating and characterizing the organisms present. This should lead to a considerable increase in the number of novel marine-derived chemicals and medicines available to the market in the near future. 

The effects of leaf and bark extracts of B. crassifolia might represent an interesting alternative and an untapped resource in the treatment of these and other milder disorders. In Latin American countries one of the main causes of mortality is also for gastrointestinal infectious disorders. The use of B. crassifolia extracts could be disseminated there, because the plant is readily available and anti-diarrhea medications are expensive and in low supply specially in rural areas. 

Many southern hemisphere nations have huge untapped resources of solar power, potentially harnessable to the production of hydrogen and power. Very few, however, have the technical and financial resources to exploit these latent assets.

Differential values of Y can be also useful for interpretation of electrosorption valency in terms of sulfate vesus bi-suUate adsorption, as one of mostly untapped resources of platinum electrochemistry. However the main progress is expected from combination of precise electrochemistry, thermodynamic analysis, and independent physical information supported by an appropriate theoretical basis, with necessary links provided by computational community. The final Section contains some brief notes in this respect. 

When we are challenged by the question of how consumers will affect health care, we can consider that the real question is how health care will embrace and benefit from the consumer s perspective. The issues are difficult and broad, but the opportunities are abundant. Aligning consumers with the health care community can provide a wealth of largely untapped resources to improve our health care system. 

The SCM should either avert (purposely reduce cancellations and capacities) this imminent oversupply or with these otherwise untapped resources - inventory and capacities - realize all other conceivable revenue. 

Paramagnetic organometallics, including f-block species, are hard to study but offer a largely untapped resource for future development.
