Attention should be paid to the fact that the ratio of Pd and phosphine ligand in active catalysts is crucial for determining the reaction paths. It is believed that dba is displaced completely with phosphines when Pd2(dba)3 is mixed with phosphines in solution. However the displacement is not eom-plcte[16]. As Skinner has pointed out [7], there is no evidence for the existence of BFyH20 in the gas phase at ordinary temperatures, and the solid monohydrate of BF3 owes its stability to the lattice energy thus D(BF3 - OH2) must be very small. The Saturated Solution.—From what has been said above, it will be seen that the condition of saturation of a solution can be defined only with respect to a certain solid phase if no solid is present, the system is undefined, for it then consists of only two phases, and is therefore bivariant. Under such circumstances not only can there be at one given temperature solutions of different concentration, all containing less of one of the components than when that component is present in the solid form, but there can also exist solutions containing more of that component than corresponds to the equilibrium when the solid is present. The products to be considered in this section are commonly called polyester resins. However, they need better definition to distinguish them from several other commercial polyesters which are also called resins. Perhaps the shortest definition is that an unsaturated polyester resin is composed of two major components, one of which is a linear polyester prepared from a glycol and an unsaturated dibasic acid, and the second is a vinyl monomer in which the first is soluble and with which it will copolymerize.
