UNS consists of a letter followed by five numbers. The letter identifies the alloy family and, where possible, the five numbers are related to the pre-UNS designation of the alloy. For example, copper alloy C61400 was formerly CD A 614 and S30400 was formerly AISI 304 stainless steel. See Figure 2-8. [Pg.23]

UNS publishes a book, Metals and Alloys in the UNS, that cross-references all alloys having a UNS designation with ASTM, ASME and other specification systems in which each specific alloy is referenced. See Figure 2-9. [Pg.23]

Specifying UNS designation alone is not sufficient. One must also reference the product specification, such as ASTM number. [Pg.23]

What s in a letter With nickel alloys it is important to make no mistake in entering the specification. For example, Hastelloy C-276 is used in many demanding chemical environments. Hastelloy B-2 also possesses exceptional chemical resistance, but to niche environments like hot hydrochloric acid. It fails rapidly if substituted for Hastelloy C-276 in a service like ferric chloride. Never call out a material merely as Hastelloy, Inconel, etc. It is best to identify any nickel alloy by its UNS designation, such as UNS N102756 for Hastelloy C-276 and N10665 for Hastelloy B-2. [Pg.95]
