The standard deviation, Sj, is the most commonly used measure of dispersion. Theoretically, the parent population from which the n observations are drawn must meet the criteria set down for the normal distribution (see Section 1.2.1) in practice, the requirements are not as stringent, because the standard deviation is a relatively robust statistic. The almost universal implementation of the standard deviation algorithm in calculators and program packages certainly increases the danger of its misapplication, but this is counterbalanced by the observation that the consistent use of a somewhat inappropriate statistic can also lead to the right conclusions. [Pg.17]

Analytical chemistry in the new millennium will continue to develop greater degrees of sophistication. The use of automation, especially involving robots, for routine work will increase and the role of ever more powerful computers and software, such as intelligent expert systems, will be a dominant factor. Extreme miniaturisation of techniques (the analytical laboratory on a chip ) and sensors designed for specific tasks will make a big impact. Despite such advances, the importance of, and the need for, trained analytical chemists is set to continue into the foreseeable future and it is vital that universities and colleges play a full part in the provision of relevant courses of study. [Pg.606]

Today we would hesitate to comment on the energy or entropy of the universe, because we have no way to measure these quantities, and we would refer only to the surroundings that are observed to interact with the system. Some cosmological theorists have suggested that the increase in entropy posmlated by the second law is a result of the expansion of the universe [6]. One recent set of astronomical measurements leads to a prediction that the universe will continue to expand, and another predicts that expansion will reach a maximum and reverse [7]. [Pg.148]

I have been actively involved in all aspects of the automation, especially economics, philosophy and management. P.S. Analytical has flourished and increased its range of products from simple accessories to fully integrated instrumental systems, for example, the Merlin Plus Fluorescence system for the determination of ultra-trace levels of mercury. [Pg.10]
