In 1957 a group of scientists at the Argonne Laboratory, the Atomic Energy Research Establishment at Harwell, England, and the Nobel Institute for Physics in Stockholm announced the isolation of element 102 (103). They proposed the name nobelium for this element. However, workers at the University of California Radiation Laboratory could not confirm this claim (104), but did identify the isotope 102254 which they obtained by bombardment of Cm246 with C12 ions in the linear accelerator. They did not immediately propose a name to replace the name nobelium (105).

He worked on national defense matters from 1940 to 1945, and during 1945 he helped design the synchrotron and synchrocyclotron. He returned to the University of California Radiation Laboratory from 1954 to 1958. 

The discovery of elements 99 and 100, like so much of the research in the 1950 s, was-the result of teamwork. The scientists involved included Ghiorso, Thompson, G. H. Higgins, and Seaborg from the University of California Radiation Laboratory, nine researchers at the Argonne National Laboratory —M. H. Studier, P. R. Fields, S. M. Fried, H. Diamond, J. F. Mech, G. L. Pyle, J. R. Huizenga, A. Hirsch, and W. M. Manning—and three others at the Los Alamos Scientific Labora- tory—C. I. Browne, H. L. Smith, and R. W. Spence.
