United States future plans

In addition to environmental and safety factors, some of the early decline in manufacture was hastened by a series of plant shutdowns between 1971 and 1973 resulting primarily from the high costs of the acetylene-based process. No new production capacity is planned in the United States for the foreseeable future. 

The FDA Modernisation Act of 1997 (FDAMA) included a number of elements that have increased the number of studies being performed on children. This was largely successful at increasing data on paediatric studies in the United States and has been now replaced by the Best Pharmaceuticals for Children Act, 4 January 2002 (Public Law No. 107-109). The European Commission has released (29 September 2004) proposed regulations that aim at promoting medicines for children which draw heavily on the successful FDA model. The regulations will probably be transposed into law in individual Member States in 2006. This means that all development plans will have to actively consider paediatric studies in the future. 

Within the last two years, major concerns over the proliferation problems associated with the recycle of uranium and plutonium have lead the President of the United States to call for an indefinite delay in future plans for reprocessing pending an evaluation... 

France remains committed to nuclear power (Figure 1.10). India is currently building six plants, Russia five, China four, and the United States and Canada one each. In the future China, Russia, South Africa, India, and other countries are planning many more, while Sweden voted to phase them out by 2010, and Germany is committed to phasing them out by 2020. 

The last ten years have witnessed a number of extensive field tests of underground coal gasification (UCG) in the United States and Europe. Model development is essential to the proper understanding of these test results and to the planning of future experiments. This report will focus upon the steady-state "permeation" or "packed bed" model of in situ gasification (forward combustion mode). In this useful but idealistic model the coal bed is assumed to be uniformly permeable to reactant and product gases.
