United Kingdom issues

In 2008, The Health and Safety Executive in the United Kingdom issued Five Steps to Risk Assessment. All employers in the United Kingdom must, by law, conduct risk assessments. 

The useful reviews of chemical and biological work on the tobacco alkaloids by Jackson,Roark, ( ) and Markwood issued in the United States have been referred to already and to these may be added that of Holman published in the United Kingdom, and the handbook of reference tables on the biochemistry of tobacco issued by Smirnov et al. in Russia. 

Courts in both the United States and the United Kingdom have had to deal with this issue in patent infringements unrelated to pharmaceutical science. 

In the United Kingdom the use of substances likely to be harmful to employees is covered by regulations issued by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), under the Health and Safety at Work Act, 1974 (HSAWA). The principal set of regulations in force is the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health regulations, 2002 known under the acronym the COSHH regulations. The COSHH regulations apply to any hazardous substance in use in any place of work.

Other chapters in this book deal with the evolution of the legal controls over medicinal products and the structure of the European Union regulatory systems set up to authorise business activities and dealings in these products, and to enforce the rules and restrictions the law places upon them. This chapter aims to select some specific legal and ethical issues that arise in relation to product development, authorisation and sale and supply both within the United Kingdom and within the context of the European systems.
