A typical open-path Fourier transform infrared system for remote monitoring of air pollutants uses a single unit (telescope) that functions as both a transmitter and receiver of infrared radiation (Figure 26.7). The radiation is generated by a silicon... [Pg.826]

Sputtered silver mirrors are used for solar energy (qv) collectors and astronomical telescope mirrors. Approximately 3 t/yr of silver are used in the United States for low emissivity windows. [Pg.86]

Type T is the spiraf-spiral flow pattern. It is used for all heating and cooling seiwices and can accommodate temperature crosses such as lean/rich seiwices in one unit. The removable covers on each end allow access to one side at a time to perform maintenance on that fluid side. Never remove a cover with one side under pressure as the unit will telescope out hke a collapsible cup. [Pg.1085]

Mast A structural tower comprising one or more sections assembled in a horizontal position near the ground and then raised to the operating position. If the unit contains two or more sections, it may be telescoped or unfolded during the erection. [Pg.501]

Figure 17. Steps in the constmction of a datacube of the nucleus of NGC1068 from observations with the integral held unit of the Gemini Multiobject Spectrograph installed on the Gemini-north telescope. The datacube is illustrated by a few spectra distributed over the field and equivalently by a few slices at a given radial velocity in the light of the [OIII]5007 emission line. Only a few percent of the total data content is shown. Figure 17. Figure 1.12 Diagrammatic interpretation of contraction in a myo-fibril of skeletal muscle. The diagram shows a single sarcomere, the basic contractile unit, limited at each end by a Z-disc. Muscle fibres are packed with hundreds of parallel myofibrils, each of which consists of many, often thousands, of sarcomeres arranged end to end. Contraction is the conseguence of the thin actin filaments being pulled over the thick filaments to increase the region of overlap and telescope the sarcomere. The mid-twentieth century marked one of the greatest watersheds of Asian history. The relatively brief Japanese occupation of Southeast Asia and much of China, and its sudden ending with the atomic bombs of August 1945, telescoped what might have been a long-term transition into a dramatic and violent revolution. In essence, imperial constructs were declared to be nation-states, the sole legitimate model of twentieth century politics, sanctioned in the sovereign equality principle of the United Nations charter (1945). [Pg.1]

One of the most widely used methods to improve overall process efficiency is to reduce the number of steps and unit operations in a synthetic route. This is more commonly known as telescoping. This can lead to more efficient, less wasteful processes that require fewer solvents because of the smaller number of steps. An example of this technique was illustrated earlier in Section 3.1.6, where the process optimization of the sertraline (Zoloft ) production process by Pfizer was described. In this case the number of process steps (unit operations) was reduced from 3 to 1, which led to huge savings due to higher productivity, fewer inputs, and less waste generation [18]. [Pg.75]

Figure 16.17. Complementarity of direct and indirect neutralino dark matter searches. The figure shows that several supersymmetric models that are within the (expected) reach of a big neutrino telescope of 10 km2 yr exposure are beyond the reach of current and future direct detection experiments. The vertical axis is the product of the neutralino-proton spin-independent scattering cross section Figure 16.17. Complementarity of direct and indirect neutralino dark matter searches.
