Union Carbide purox system

The Union Carbide Purox system (17) uses municipal solid waste as the feed. Shredded ferrous-free refuse enters the top of the conversion furnace and is contacted countercurrently with hot combustion gases from the reaction occurring in the hearth. 

The Union Carbide Company Purox gasifier is an example of the oxygen system. This unit also uses a moving-bed reactor. Pure oxygen is the oxidizing agent used to convert the char into CO and CO2. Molten ash leaves the bottom at about 1670°C. 

The pyrolysis and melting process developed by Nippon Steel Co., Ltd. was adopted at Ibaraki City to treat 450 tons/day (150 tons/ day X 3) of MR, and is under construction. Funabashi City has decided to use the dual fluidized bed reactor system (Pyrox process) to treat 450 tons/day (150 tons/day X 3) of MR, and Chichibu City has decided to use the Purox process developed by Showa Denko Co., Ltd. and Union Carbide Co., Ltd.. The design and construction of these plants were started this April. 

The PUROX System, developed by Union Carbide Corporation of the U.S., pyrolyzes refuse by use of oxygen. It additionally purifies and recovers the pyrolysis gas and collects the inorganic residue in the form of slag. The wastewater generated during gas purification is discharged after treatment. There are several papers (1, 2, 3, 4 ) published on the details of the system. 

Using the PUROX System pilot plant of Union Carbide located at Tonawanda, New York, U. S. A., Showa Denko conducted a demonstration test on simulated Japanese refuse from June through August, 1978, after making some modifications of the plant. An overall view of the pilot plant appears in Figure 3. The purpose of the demonstration was to achieve the following three objectives.
