Ultraviolet light skin damage caused

Why does ultraviolet light cause more damage to our skin than visible light ... [Pg.175]

Recent progress in the details of the metabolism of HA has also clarified the long appreciated observations that chronic inflammation, and sun damage caused by ultraviolet light cause premature aging of skin. These processes as well as normal aging, all utilize similar mechanisms that cause loss of moisture and changes in HA distribution. [Pg.246]

Health hazards— Sunlight contains ultraviolet (UV) radiation which causes premature aging of the skin, wrinkles, cataracts, and skin cancer. The amount of damage from UV exposure depends on the strength of the light, the length of exposure, and whether the skin is protected. There are no safe UV rays or safe suntans. [Pg.74]

One such example is the use of ultraviolet (UV) light to treat infant jaundice. Infant jaundice is a condition in which the skin and the whites of the eyes appear yellow because of high levels of the bile pigment bilirubin in the blood. BUirubin is a breakdown product of the oxygen-carrying blood protein hemoglobin. If bilirubin accumulates in the body, it can cause brain damage and death. The immature liver of the baby cannot remove the bilirubin. [Pg.7]

Ultraviolet (UV) light is responsible for sunburns, and repeated exposure can cause skin cancer by damaging DNA molecules in skin cells (Section 29.6). [Pg.498]

Occupational exposure of farmworkers to the quinoxa-line class of antimicrobials may result in dermal photosensitivity reactions. In general terms, photosensitivity may take the form of phototoxic reactions, whereby a drug absorbs energy from ultraviolet A light and releases it into the skin, causing cellular damage or photoallergic reactions. [Pg.19]
