Ultraviolet light properties

The 2-imino-4-thiazolines may be used as ultraviolet-light stabilizers of polyolefin compositions (1026). 2-Aminothiazole improves adhesive properties of wood to wood glue (271). Cbmpound 428 exhibits antioxidant properties (Scheme 242) (1027). Ammonium N-(2-thiazolyl)dithio-carbamate (429) is a bactericide and fungicide used in industrial products such as lumber, paint, plastics, and textiles (1037). Compound 430 is reported (1038) to form an excellent volume of foam coating in aluminum pans when ignited with propane. [Pg.170]

Binders and Resins. The choice of binder is the most important ingredient choice in the formulation process because the binder affects the performance properties of a paint more than any other single ingredient (3). The physical properties of binders required for paints include the abiHty to dry or cure under various ambient conditions, good adhesion to various substrates, abrasion resistance, washabiHty, flexibiHty, water resistance, and ultraviolet light resistance. The balance of these required properties is mosdy dependent on whether the paint is being developed for interior or exterior appHcations. [Pg.540]

Pigments and Extenders. Pigments are selected for use in house paints based on thek appearance and performance quaUties. Appearance includes color and opacifying abiUty. Performance quaUties include ultraviolet light resistance, fade resistance, exterior weatherabiUty, chemical resistance, as well as particle size and shape. Toxicity profiles and safety and health related properties are also important criteria in pigment selection. [Pg.541]

This substantial group was developed as a fluorescent, acid-labile protective group for oligonucleotide synthesis. It has properties very similar to those of the DMTr group except that it can be detected down to 10 M on TLC plates with 360-nm ultraviolet light. [Pg.65]

The above are of course only some of the most common characteristics. Individual materials may have special properties such as photoconductivity, very low coefficient of friction to steel, high dielectric constant, high ultraviolet light transmission and so on. [Pg.16]

The reaction is catalyzed hy ultraviolet light with a wave-length between 3,300-3,600A. The sulfonates are nearly 100% biodegradable, soft and stable in hard water, and have good washing properties. [Pg.185]

When an ionic solution contains neutral molecules, their presence may be inferred from the osmotic and thermodynamic properties of the solution. In addition there are two important effects that disclose the presence of neutral molecules (1) in many cases the absorption spectrum for visible or ultraviolet light is different for a neutral molecule in solution and for the ions into which it dissociates (2) historically, it has been mainly the electrical conductivity of solutions that has been studied to elucidate the relation between weak and strong electrolytes. For each ionic solution the conductivity problem may be stated as follows in this solution is it true that at any moment every ion responds to the applied field as a free ion, or must we say that a certain fraction of the solute fails to respond to the field as free ions, either because it consists of neutral undissociated molecules, or for some other reason ... [Pg.38]

Poly(ethylene terephthalate), (PET), is a thermoplastic polymer widely used in the production of fibers and films on exposure to near ultraviolet light, PET fibers tend to lose their elasticity and break easily PET films become discolored, brittle and develop crazed surfaces. Such deterioration in properties has been attributed to photochemical reactions initiated by the... [Pg.240]

The observations that identify chemical properties are (c) ultraviolet light converts ozone into oxygen, (e) sodium metal reacts violently with water, and (f) C02 does not support combustion. [Pg.13]

They can withstand exposure to ozone, ultraviolet light and weathering. They have excellent dielectric properties and are not affected by oils. They get more easily tom than mbber and dissolve in aromatic solvent. [Pg.207]

Table 1.1 shows the properties of visible and ultraviolet light. [Pg.4]

It turned out that aflatoxin was actually a mixture of four different but closely related chemicals. All possessed the same molecular backbone of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms (which backbone was quite complex and not known to be present in any other natural or synthetic chemicals), but differed from one another in some minor details. Two of the aflatoxins emitted a blue fluorescence when they were irradiated with ultraviolet light, and so were named aflatoxin Bi and B2 the names aflatoxin Gi and G2 were assigned to the green-fluorescing compounds. The intense fluorescent properties of the aflatoxins would later prove an invaluable aid to chemists interested in measuring the amount of these substances present in various foods, because the intensity of the fluorescence was related to the amount of chemical present. [Pg.3]
