The Arbeitsgemeinschaft Versuchsreaktor (AVR) and Thorium High-Temperature Reactor (THTR-300) were both helium-cooled reactors of the pebble-bed design [29,42,43]. Plastics behavior in fire depends upon the nature and scale of the fire as well as the surrounding conditions and how the products are designed. For example, the virtually allplastic 35 mm slide projector uses a very hot electric bulb. When designed with a metal light and heat reflector with an air circulating fan, no fire develops. Therefore, designing in this type product environment requires understanding all the variables so that the proper plastics can be used. 

Instruments are calibrated with substances of known relative molecular mass and very accurate mass measurements can be made with this type of analyser. Sensitivity is very high and there is virtually no upper limit to the working mass range. The performance of TOF instruments can be improved further by the incorporation of an electrostatic reflector (reflectron) which ensures that all ions of identical mass reach the detector simultaneously by correcting for any differences in their kinetic energies. 

In a reflector TOF instrument, PSD can be performed. The Qq-TOF is an oa-TOF with a quadrupole as a precursor selector. TOF-TOF is a type of instrument that has emerged in recent years and has enabled MALDI-TOF instruments that can deliver good MS/MS data. There are also examples of instruments with two consecutive reflector TOFs. TOF analyzers can also be coupled to ion traps and to sector instruments. See Chapter 3 for more thorough MS/MS descriptions. 

Other types of optical microcavities employing the DBR mechanism of light confinement include planar annular Bragg resonators (Scheuer, 2005), based on a radial defect surrounded by Bragg reflectors, and their 3-D equivalent, spherical Bragg onion resonators (Liang, 2004). 

A. a,a,ot, a -Tetrabromo-o-xylene. In a 2-1. three-necked flask equipped with an oil-lubricated Trubore stirrer, a dropping funnel, a thermometer extending nearly to the bottom of the flask, and a reflux condenser (Note 1) attached to a gas absorption trap 2 is placed 117 g. (1.1 moles) of dry o-xylene (Note 2). An ultraviolet lamp such as a General Electric R.S. Reflector Type 275-watt sun lamp is placed about 1 cm. from the flask so as to admit the maximum amount of light. The stirrer is started, and the o-xylene is heated to 120° with an electric heating mantle. A total of 700 g. (4.4 moles) of bromine (n.f. grade) is added in portions from the dropping funnel to the reaction flask at such a rate that the bromine color is removed as fast as it is added.
