Large quantities of fluorine can be disposed of with large burners and scrubbers, or charcoal systems. Turnbull reports the disposal of 125 lb of fluorine per hour in a 10-in. ring-type burner followed by 30-ft water and caustic scrubbers packed with 2-in. carbon rings. ... [Pg.90]

Guidance issued by the Institute of Chartered Accountants (known as the Turnbull Report) in September 1999 for companies listed on the London Stock Exchange identified that the board of the organisation should maintain a sound system of internal control in order to safeguard the organisation s shareholders investment and the organisation s assets. [Pg.280]

The classical synthesis of mesoionic 1,2,3-oxadiazohum-5-olates (3), the so-called sydnones , by Earl and Mackney (42), involving the cyclodehydration of an N-nitrosoglycine derivative, continues to be the only viable method for their preparation. However, Turnbull and co-worker (43) reported that the use of neutral nitrosation conditions avoids the formation of C-nitrosation and allows for the synthesis of previously inaccessible 3-arylsydnones, such as 3-(2-acetylphenyl) sydnone. The method is illustrated below. [Pg.696]

Dumitrascu and co-workers (52) transformed 4-halosydnones into 5-halopyr-azoles by cycloaddition with DMAD and methyl propiolate followed by retro-Diels-Alder loss of CO2. Turnbull and co-workers (194) reported that the cycloadditions of 3-phenylsydnone with DMAD and diethyl acetylenedicarboxylate to form pyrazoles can be achieved in supercritical carbon dioxide. Nan ya et al. (195) studied this sydnone in its reaction with 2-methylbenzoquinone to afford the expected isomeric indazole-4,7-diones. Interestingly, Sasaki et al. (196) found that 3-phenylsydnone effects the conversion of l,4-dihydronaphthalene-l,4-imines to isoindoles, presumably by consecutive loss of carbon dioxide and A-phenylpyrazole from the primary cycloadduct. Ranganathan et al. (197-199) studied dipolar cycloadditions with the sydnone 298 derived from A-nitrosoproline (Scheme 10.43). Both acetylenic and olefinic dipolarophiles react with 298. The history of the azides starts in 1864 with the first report on phenyl azide by Griess. In 1990, the first preparation of hydrazoic acid by Curtins had its 100th anniversary. There are many reports on aliphatic and aromatic azides in the literature. In a very recent and thorough review Scriven and Turnbull present a highly impressive list of review articles which have appeared in the 20 years since 1970. Out of the many possibilities for preparing all types of azides, substitution reactions are of special importance. Here again a series of recent review articles will guarantee a quick orientation in the field. [Pg.245]

Fortimately, several hydrocarbon liquids which are of interest in the present discussion have been among those studied. Turnbull and Cormia [66] report a value of 9.6 dynes per cm. for the solid-liquid interfacial tension of n-octadecane and 7.2 dynes per cm. for n-hepta-decane. They suggest that these two values are characteristic of the higher n-alkanes with even and odd numbers of carbon atoms, respectively. That is, for each series, the solid-liquid tension is independent of the number of carbon atoms. Data for other hydrocarbons are given by Thomas and Stavely [64]. They report values of 20.4 dynes per cm. for benzene, 24.0 for biphenyl, and 30.1 for naphthalene. [Pg.173]
