Tungsten complexes, carbonylation

As in the case of chromium and tungsten, manganese carbonyl adducts of Me2SO have been used as catalysts for the polymerization of vinyl chloride (248). Preparative studies have allowed the isolation of complexes of the type [MnCCpHjMeXCOlXRaSO)] [RjSO = (CH2)4SO, (CH20)2S0 see ref. 255], and infrared (257) and mass spectral studies (154, 275) have appeared on these and related systems. 

Another example concerns the initial electronic reduction of a-nitrostilbene (Todres et al. 1982, 1985, Todres and Tsvetkova 1987, Kraiya et al. 2004). The reduction develops according to direction a in Scheme 2.9 if the mercury cathode as well as cyclooctatetraene dianion are electron sources and according to direction b if the same stilbene enters the charge-transfer complexes with bis(pyridine)-tungsten tetra(carbonyl) or uranocene. For direction b, the charge-transfer bands in the electronic spectra are fixed. So the mentioned data reveal a great difference in electrochemical and chemical reduction processes a and b as they are marked in Scheme 2.9. 

There are few examples of metal complexes reacting with 1,2,3-thiadiazoles to form stable products one case involves the formation of the 2-substituted derivative (23) with tungsten penta-carbonyl (Equation (9)) <83CB230>. Reaction of simple 1,2,3-thiadiazoles with peracid occurs preferentially at N3 to give an A-oxide <84CHEC-I(6)447>. 

The 4,5-diphenyl-1,2,3-triphospholide ion (194) coordinates molybdenum and tungsten penta-carbonyl in two steps to P-1,3 and to P-2 <94BSF397>. With FeCl2 a sandwich complex is obtained <93PS(77)254>.

The tungsten(II) carbonyl complex (CO)4W(/u.-Cl)3W(SnCl3)(CO)3 has been identified as a very effective catalyst for the hydroarylation of norbornene conducted in arene solution at room temperature. Norbornene adducts with benzene, toluene, p-xylene, and mesitylene have been isolated. On the basis of XH NMR monitoring of several catalytic reactions, a possible mechanism, involving coordination of norbornene to the W(II) atom and its activation, has been proposed.123...
