Triterpenic acid glycoside

Neutral and acid triterpenes have been treated in the two preceding sections. These compounds can also be combined in glycosides. One may therefore expect that neutral and acid glycosides will occur in nature, all the more so because uronic acids are not excluded as sugar components. Chromatographic investigations should be aimed in this direction. 

The HPLC-peaks 1-3 of the extract samples 1 and 3 can be identified as main flavonoid-C-glycosides of Semen Vaccariae. The peaks 4a-c are identical with the triterpenic acids (sapogenins) of Semen Vaccariae. 

Alcohol reflux extraction, ultrasound assisted extraction, Soxhlet extraction and supercritical fluid extraction (SPE) are the main teehniques used to isolate triterpenoids from Cornus spp. fimits [Zhao et al., 2005], Thin layer chromatography (TEC), HPLC and cyclodextrin-modified micellar eleetrokinetie ehromatography (CD-MEKC) have also been apphed for separation and determination of these three triterpenic acids in Iriiits [Zhang et al., 2005 Wang et al., 2008]. The isolated triterpenie compounds and their glycosides were identified by speetroscopie analysis NMR, IR and MS.

Mate contains both caffeine (0.4-2.4%) and theobromine (0.3-0.5%). Also found are triterpene saponins and the caffeic acid derivatives—chlorogenic acid, neochlorogenic acid, and cryptochlorogenic acid. Flavonoids in mate are rutin, isoquercetin, and kaemferol glycosides. A nitrile glycoside, menisdaurin, is also present, which is noncyanogenic.

The basic compound is a triterpene glycoside. It is extracted from the licorice root, of which the principal sources are China, Russia, Spain, Italy, France, Iran, Iraq, and Turkey. The roots, containing 10% moisture, are dned and shredded, after which they are extracted with aqueous ammonia, concentrated in vacuum evaporators, precipitated with sulfuric acid, and crystallized with 95% ethyl alcohol.
