GC-MS has been widely used in the analysis of carbohydrate materials. The photosynthetic incorporation of C02 into carbohydrates by corn and soyabean plants can be conveniently monitored by this technique using trimethylsilylated oxime derivatives,22 gnd a capillary GC-CI MS procedure has been used to analyse mixtures of pentosesand hexoses via trifluoro-acetylated oxime derivatives. Much of our knowledge on the fragmentation patterns of carbohydrate derivatives arises from studies on methylated monosaccharides, but in structural investigations, such compounds are seldom subjected to mass spectrometry. On the other hand, the molecular weight of a permethylated oligosaccharide is significantly less than that of the per(trimethylsilyl) derivative. For this reason, the mass spectra of disaccharides as -their permethylated alditols have been determined by Chizhov and coworkers, Karkkainen, and Krone and Beckey. Trisaccharides have also been studied by Karkkainen, either as permethylated glycosides or as alditols. ... 

Its use was demonstrated in the analysis of cyclitols, hexoses, alditols, and oligosaccharides up to DP 6. The capillary g.c. separation of thirteen trifluoroacetylated trisaccharides has been reported, those with reducing sugar moieties giving two peaks.

The H-n.m.r. spectra of various carrageenan-derived oligosaccharides have been analysed by means of DQ COSY and H- C-correlated methods. H- and C-asagnments have been reported for sialylated oligosaccharide alditols related to mucins, and for the pentasaccharide of the genus-specitic epitope of Chlamydia lipopolysaccharide. The structure of the fully methylated alditol acetate of 16 has been determined solely on the basis of n.m.r. data. A natural abundance heteronuclear-multiple-quantum-coherence (HMQC) experiment has been iUustrated by use of trisaccharide Lewis glucal.
