And there were three suns rose, said another, who I saw in the leap of a flame to be William Grimsby, one of the squires. A showing of divine favor, so he announced, being a sign of the Trinity. And the men say his victory proves it. ... [Pg.118]

The first nuclear bomb that was tested was called Trinity and weighed 10,000 pounds. Todays bombs weigh about 250 pounds and are about the size of an average suitcase. [Pg.319]

Mathematicians have their names attached to theorems, lemmas and even conjectures naturalists have species and genera called after them physicists have their principles and chemists their reactions and reagents. Engineers can claim the dimensionless parameters, for they, who, in their function as designers, have often to work with units, appreciate more than anyone the conceptual beauty of the dimensionless number, invested as it is with full contextual meaning and magnitude. I submit that it would be more than appropriate to call this transfer parameter the Davidson number, for who has done more to elucidate the mechanism of this transfer process than John Davidson Damkohler has preempted the initial letters Da, but that is no matter, for transfer gives us Tr and we immediately think of Trinity and its present Vice-Master. [Pg.216]

Priestley, like Stephen Hales, was a clergyman and a natural philosopher. Unlike Hales, he was also very much a dissenter in matters of religion and politics, where his refusal to accept the doctrine of the Holy Trinity and his enthusiastic support for the French Revolution combined to make him loathed by the establishment. But he was essentially conservative in matters of chemical research, even though he made many new discoveries. [Pg.58]

To deny that Jews had been maliciously killed en masse by Germany in a tribunal whose very existence was based upon the intent to establish without doubt that Jews had been killed was as fatal to the defendant in 1946 as it would have been to an accused medieval heretic who before his inquisitors guaranteed his condemnation on whatever charge by throwing in for the hell of it a denial of the existence of the Trinity and the Divinity of Jesus. 1... [Pg.85]

My father was no dabbler but a true alchemist, though he had received an orthodox education at Trinity and was fascinated by all branches of natural philosophy. He had become a fellow of the Royal Society on the strength of his expertise in minerals and investigations into the nature of fire, but still his vocation remained alchemy. Like most alchemists, he was largely self-taught, though he was in secret correspondence with other practitioners, notably his former teacher at Cambridge, Isaac Newton, now president of the Royal Society. [Pg.5]

Hid the copy of the Boerhaave I brought back from London for her. Can t bear to look at it, but nor could I burn it, so I thrust it away under the floor. All wasted. Wept again when I touched that book. On the journey back from London had planned how I would argue with her. Knew that she would be triumphant when she read Boerhaave on fire. Looked forward to seeing her smile, and thought I would tease her. She has become an excellent advocate. She could stand up before two hundred fellows at Trinity and hold her own. [Pg.201]

Before the war Nagel who was a non-researcher ran the Balliol-Trinity Laboratory, leaving research to Hartley. But from 1921, when Hinshelwood succeeded Nagel at Trinity and joined forces with Hartley, the new director of the laboratory, research received greater emphasis. Though Hartley had studied in Munich under Willstatter and Groth, his greatest debt was to... [Pg.151]

Meanwhile, Hinshelwood and his colleagues had been enrolled in a separate research project for the Ministry of Supply. On succeeding Soddy in 1937 he had moved his office to the Old Chemistry Department that he soon renamed the Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory. Thompson and his junior colleagues J.W. Linnett and L.A.K. Staveley, departmental demonstrators from 1939 and 1940 respectively, were housed there Leslie Sutton was in the Dyson Perrins laboratory, and the other physical chemists in the Balliol-Trinity and Jesus laboratories. This distribution had long been perceived to be an unsatisfactory arrangement and plans for a new Physical Chemistry Laboratory (Figure 6.1) were underway as early as 1934, even before Soddy had been persuaded to step... [Pg.189]
