Trimethyl cyclopentane

The rearrangement and formation of 2,2-dimethylbutane—with a quaternary carbon atom—is only possible via the above mechanism. Over platinum, 2,3-dimethylbutane (75) gave more benzene over palladium, 2,2-dimethylbutane (97a) gave more benzene. This is the opposite selectivity, as reported by Muller and Gault, for ring expansion of 1,1,3-trimethyl-cyclopentane (57). This may be more evidence that at least two different types of bond shift mechanism can occur. [Pg.300]

The thermal polymerization of isobutylene (at 370-460° and 540-5350 p.s.i.) is of particular interest because it yields 1,1,3-trimethyl-cyclopentane rather than 2,4,4-trimethyl-l- and -2-pentene (McKinley et al., 11). This cyclic dimer amounted to as much as 45.9% of the total liquid product when the reaction was carried out at 400° and 540 p.s.i. It was suggested that its formation might involve one of three mechanisms ... [Pg.26]

Not all instances of conformational polymorphism are as dramatic as that just described, and often different conformers of a single side chain are able to pack into different crystalline arrangements. For instance, the two polymorphs of/>-(li ,3 S)-3-thioanisoyl-l,2,2-trimethyl-cyclopentane carboxylic acid were found to be associated with different conformations of the carboxylate group [15], Torsion about a single C-N bond was shown to be the origin of the polymorphism detected for lomeridine dihydrochloride [16], Finally, relatively small differences in molecular conformation were detected for the two polymorphic and four solvated crystalline forms of spironlactone [17],... [Pg.235]
