Trifluoromethyl aniline

Bromo-Ar,Ar-dimethyl-3-(trifluoromethyl)aniline has been prepared by the methylation of 4-bromo-3-(trifhioromethvl)aniline with trimethyl phosphate in 70-80% yield.3 The present method, which effectively uses 3-(trifluoroinethyl)aniline as starting material, offers advantages in cost, yield, and ease of purification.

On the basis of labelling studies it has been concluded70 that an intermediate of the type (53) must be involved in the reaction of 3-bromo-2-nitrobenzo[b]thiophene (52) with 3-(trifluoromethyl)aniline in order to account for the observed labelling patterns in the products (54) and (55). 

Urea herbicides. Phenyl urea chemistry represents one of the earliest classes of herbicides. Replacement of the aromatic chlorines of diuron with a trifluoro-methyl group resulted in improved crop selectivity. Fluometuron (Cotoran ) and parafluron are both selective urea herbicides, fluometuron developed for the control of grass and broadleaf weeds in cotton. It was prepared from the corresponding 3-trifluoromethyl anilines. A number of other phenyl urea herbicides were introduced later, including trimefluor, 3-chloro-4-trifluoromethoxyphenyl-A/,A/-dimethyl urea [19]. 

The oxidation of 3-(trifluoromethyl)aniline (1) with chromium(VI) oxide is an approved method for the preparation of trifluoroacetic acid in high yield (90 -95 %) " however, today, more economical processes have been developed.

Eq. (a) illustrates the reaction between 3-trifluoromethyl aniline with two moles of chlorosulphonic acid to form one mole of 5-trifluoromethylaniline-2, 4-disulphonyl chloride (I) with the elimination of two moles of water as indicated above. The amino moiety being ortho-and para-directing yields compound (I) which is an intermediate.

The reaction of benzotrichloride with anhydrous HF at 120 °C in a nickel or stainless-steel reactor produces benzotrifluoride, from which 3-trifluoromethyl-aniline is obtained by selective nitration and subsequent catalytic reduction of the 3-trifIuoromethylnitrobenzene.
