The idea of controlling the whole arm and assist manipulation in humans lacking shoulder and elbow control is getting more attention recently by the research team at the Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) in Cleveland, OH [36-39]. The system was designed to combine a fuUy implantable grasping system with some additional channels to control elbow extension, flexion, and shoulder movements. The control of reaching, unlike the control in the BGS NP, measures the position of the arm in space and for certain arm positions automatically triggers stimulation of the triceps brachii m. [Pg.1158]

Cranial Tibial / Gastrocnemius / Extensor Carpi Radialis / Triceps Brachii Not normally assessed unless lesions are suspected or are required by protocol. Examiner should be experienced in producing these particular reflexes, as proper interpretation can be difficult. [Pg.80]

The computational algorithm shown in Fig. 6.12 was used to model the paths of the triceps brachii muscle in the arm (Gamer and Pandy, 2000). The muscle was separated into three segments ... [Pg.151]

A contraction of our musculus biceps bmchii leads to a reduction of the angle a between the upper arm and the forearm (see Fig. 9.11). The opposing musculus triceps brachii undergoes a simultaneous extension. A contraction of the triceps leads to an increase in the angle a and to an extension of the biceps. Biceps and triceps are muscular antagonists. [Pg.480]

Extension of the elbow from the anatomic position is limited (5 to 10 degrees) by contact of the olecranon process with the fossa, tension in the anterior ligament, and resistance of anterior muscles. The triceps brachii is the only significant elbow muscle that functions in extension. There is some minor contribution by the anconeus. Because most elbow extension is accomplished by gravity, the triceps functions primarily against resistance. [Pg.419]
