Triage categories expectant

Expectant—the patient needs medical care beyond that which the MTF can provide this patient is therefore expected to die. As resources change, this patient s condition may be re-evaluated and his triage category changed to a higher category (Sidell et al., 1997). 

The triage officer sorts each casualty into one of the four triage categories immediate, minimal, delayed, or expectant (Exhibit 13-1). At lower echelons of care, the triage officer may be a senior medic (who may also be the staff at the emergency treatment station) at higher echelons, he may be a physician s assistant, dentist, or physician.

Triaging patients as expectant will depend very much on the circumstances of the release, the number of casualties and the medical care available. Patients with severe respiratory failure and arrest may fall into fliis category. Death will be from secondary cardiac arrest following respiratory arrest. This can be prevented if early airway and artificial ventilation support is provided.
