Drought resistant tree

Neem oil is extracted from fruits and seeds of Azadirachta indica, a tree from the Meliaceae family native to India and the Indian subcontinent. It is highly drought-resistant, and not sensitive to water quality, tolerating temperatures above 35°C but not below 4°C. More than 2000 years ago, neem products were already used for medicinal purposes due to its antifungal, antidiabetic, antiviral, antibacterial, anthelmintic, contraceptive, and sedative properties (Biswas et al., 2002). Nowadays, its sprouts and flowers are still used in several bitter dishes in Southeast Asia it represents a good alternative to synthetic pesticides and is very valuable in the cosmetics industry. [Pg.101]

The regular use of deicing salts, essentially sodium and calcium chlorides, in winter period, affects the resistance to drought stress of trees and crops, and increases the sensitivity of plants to parasitic diseases. [Pg.11]
