The two structures appear very similar. Poly( 1,2-propylene adipate) has the same basic structure as poly(ethylene adipate), except for a pendant methyl group. This pendant methyl group on the poly( 1,2-propylene adipate) makes a large difference, however. Poly( 1,2-propylene adipate) has no crystalline melting point. Trappe theorizes that the pendant methyl prevents chain packing and therefore, prevents crystallization [42].

Arranging the solvents in separation-strength order, the so-called eluotropic series appeared. This term, introduced by Trappe, was related to the experience with bare silica, where a strong solvent is able to move polar solutes on a polar stationary phase. Later this was improved by the discovery of a direct proportion between the elution strength and the dielectric constant. Because silica is hydrophilic and highly polar, there was a correlation between the eluotropic series and the polarity of a solvent [16,18].

Respiratory Effects. Breathing irregularities including Cheyne-Stokes respiration developed in two persons who fell into cisterns containing copper cyanide or potassium cyanide (Dodds and McKnight 1985 Trapp 1970) or whose hands were exposed to hydrogen cyanide (Potter 1950). The effects reflect the central nervous system toxicity of cyanide.
