Carcinogenesis transplacental

Preconceptual and transplacental carcinogenesis are special types of developmental toxicity and can result when either parent is exposed prior to mating. Both male-mediated and female-mediated effects have been demonstrated in experimental animals for a variety of chemicals and several types of radiation (Anderson, 2000). Transplacental carcinogenesis is recognized in the female, but carcinogenesis mediated through the male germ cells is not as well appreciated or understood. [Pg.97]

On the contrary, transplacental carcinogenesis of many chemicals is well documented in many experimental studies. Moreover, it has been proved as early as in the 1960s that much lower doses are effective for an in utero exposure than for an exposure in adults... [Pg.132]

The final point - transplacental carcinogenesis - has in a similar manner as the Thalidomide accident not been predicted from animal experiments but was unfortunately first detected in the human population. Diethylstilbestrol, a synthetic female sex hormone, was found to induce adenoma and carcinoma of the vagina in daughters 15 to 20 years after treatment of the mothers for threatened abortion. [Pg.58]
