Calculated transition structures may be very sensitive Lo the level of theory employed. Semi-empirical methods, since they are parametrized for energy miriimnm structures, may be less appropriate for transition state searching than ab initio methods are. Transition structures are norm ally characterized by weak partial" bonds, that is, being broken or formed. In these cases UHF calculations arc necessary, and sometimes even the inclusion of electron correlation effects. [Pg.17]

The bond orders obtained from Mayer s formula often seem intuitively reasonable, as illustrated in Table 2.6 for some simple molecules. The method has also been used to compute the bond orders for intermediate structures in reactions of the form H -1- XH HX -1- H and X I- XH -H H (X = F, Cl, Br). The results suggested that bond orders were a useful way to describe the similarity of the transition structure to the reactants or to the products. Moreover, the bond orders were approximately conserved along the reaction pathway. [Pg.103]

Molecular mechanics methods are not generally applicable to structures very far from equilibrium, such as transition structures. Calculations that use algebraic expressions to describe the reaction path and transition structure are usually semiclassical algorithms. These calculations use an energy expression fitted to an ah initio potential energy surface for that exact reaction, rather than using the same parameters for every molecule. Semiclassical calculations are discussed further in Chapter 19. [Pg.53]

Orbital-based methods can be used to compute transition structures. When a negative frequency is computed, it indicates that the geometry of the molecule corresponds to a maximum of potential energy with respect to the positions of the nuclei. The transition state of a reaction is characterized by having one negative frequency. Structures with two negative frequencies are called second-order saddle points. These structures have little relevance to chemistry since it is extremely unlikely that the molecule will be found with that structure. [Pg.94]

Traditionally, molecular mechanics has not been the method of choice for predicting transition structures. However, since it is the only method viable for many large molecules, some elforts have been made to predict transition structures. Since the bonds are explicitly defined in molecular mechanics methods, it is not possible to simply find a point that is an energy maximum, except for conformational intermediates. [Pg.148]

The technique most often used (i.e., for an atom transfer) is to hrst plot the energy curve due to stretching a bond that is to be broken (without the new bond present) and then plot the energy curve due to stretching a bond that is to be formed (without the old bond present). The transition structure is next dehned as the point at which these two curves cross. Since most molecular mechanics methods were not designed to describe bond breaking and other reaction mechanisms, these methods are most reliable when a class of reactions has been tested against experimental data to determine its applicability and perhaps a suitable correction factor. [Pg.149]

Results using this technique are better for force helds made to describe geometries away from equilibrium. For example, it is better to use Morse potentials than harmonic potentials to describe bond stretching. Some researchers have created force helds for a specihc reaction. These are made by htting to the potential energy surface obtained from ah initio calculations. This is useful for examining dynamics on the surface, but it is much more work than simply using ah initio methods to hnd a transition structure. [Pg.149]

Transition structures are more dihicult to describe than equilibrium geometries. As such, lower levels of theory such as semiempirical methods, DFT using a local density approximation (LDA), and ah initio methods with small basis sets do not generally describe transition structures as accurately as they describe equilibrium geometries. There are, of course, exceptions to this, but they must be identihed on a case-by-case basis. As a general rule of thumb, methods that are empirically dehned, such as semiempirical methods or the G1 and G2 methods, describe transition structures more poorly than completely ah initio methods do. [Pg.149]

The optimization of a transition structure will be much faster using methods for which the Hessian can be analytically calculated. For methods that incrementally compute the Hessian (i.e., the Berny algorithm), it is fastest to start with a Hessian from some simpler calculation, such as a semiempirical calculation. Occasionally, dilficulties are encountered due to these simpler methods giving a poor description of the Hessian. An option to compute the initial Hessian at the desired level of theory is often available to circumvent this problem at the expense of additional CPU time. [Pg.152]

A transition structure is, of course, a maximum on the reaction pathway. One well-defined reaction path is the least energy or intrinsic reaction path (IRC). Quasi-Newton methods oscillate around the IRC path from one iteration to the next. Several researchers have proposed methods for obtaining the IRC path from the quasi-Newton optimization based on this observation. [Pg.154]

A number of types of calculations can be performed. These include optimization of geometry, transition structure optimization, frequency calculation, and IRC calculation. It is also possible to compute electronic excited states using the TDDFT method. Solvation effects can be included using the COSMO method. Electric fields and point charges may be included in the calculation. Relativistic density functional calculations can be run using the ZORA method or the Pauli Hamiltonian. The program authors recommend using the ZORA method. [Pg.333]

The HE, GVB, local MP2, and DFT methods are available, as well as local, gradient-corrected, and hybrid density functionals. The GVB-RCI (restricted configuration interaction) method is available to give correlation and correct bond dissociation with a minimum amount of CPU time. There is also a GVB-DFT calculation available, which is a GVB-SCF calculation with a post-SCF DFT calculation. In addition, GVB-MP2 calculations are possible. Geometry optimizations can be performed with constraints. Both quasi-Newton and QST transition structure finding algorithms are available, as well as the SCRF solvation method. [Pg.337]
