This situation, despite the fact that reliability is increasing, is very undesirable. A considerable effort will be needed to revise the shape of the potential functions such that transferability is greatly enhanced and the number of atom types can be reduced. After all, there is only one type of carbon it has mass 12 and charge 6 and that is all that matters. What is obviously most needed is to incorporate essential many-body interactions in a proper way. In all present non-polarisable force fields many-body interactions are incorporated in an average way into pair-additive terms. In general, errors in one term are compensated by parameter adjustments in other terms, and the resulting force field is only valid for a limited range of environments. [Pg.8]

Though the case of constant matrix elements and the example investigated by Hite are the only situations for which Che stoichiometric relations have been fully established in pellets of arbitrary shape, it is worth mentioning situations in which these relations are known not to hold. A proper resolution of Che status of Che stoichiometric relations in the theory of steady states of catalyst pellets would be very desirable. Flow Past Bodies. A fluid moving past a surface of a soHd exerts a drag force on the soHd. This force is usually manifested as a drop in pressure in the fluid. Locally, at the surface, the pressure loss stems from the stresses exerted by the fluid on the surface and the equal and opposite stresses exerted by the surface on the fluid. Both shear stresses and normal stresses can contribute their relative importance depends on the shape of the body and the relationship of fluid inertia to the viscous stresses, commonly expressed as a dimensionless number called the Reynolds number (R ), EHp/]1. A low temperature of approach for the network reduces utihties but raises heat-transfer area requirements. Research has shown that for most of the pubhshed problems, utility costs are normally more important than annualized capital costs. For this reason, AI is chosen eady in the network design as part of the first tier of the solution. The temperature of approach, AI, for the network is not necessarily the same as the minimum temperature of approach, AT that should be used for individual exchangers. This difference is significant for industrial problems in which multiple shells may be necessary to exchange the heat requited for a given match (5). The economic choice for AT depends on whether the process environment is heater- or refrigeration-dependent and on the shape of the composite curves, ie, whether approximately parallel or severely pinched. In cmde-oil units, the range of AI is usually 10—20°C. By definition, AT A AT. The best relative value of these temperature differences depends on the particular problem under study. [Pg.521]
