Using the accumulated data obtained from in-situ and high resolution electron microscopy studies, Baker and co-workers (ref. 22) developed a model to account for the growth of filamentous carbon resulting from metal catalyzed decomposition of selected hydrocarbons. The main steps in the mechanism are adsorption and decomposition of hydrocarbons at the leading face of catalyst particle, followed by dissolution of carbon in the metal and diffusion to the trailing faces where carbon is precipitated from solution to form the filament. A mechanism has been postulated to account for the growth of filamentous carbon produced from metal catalyzed decomposition of acetylene ( 5, 6). This mechanism, which is outlined in the schematic diagram, Figure 2, involves the diffusion of carbon through the catalyst particle from the hotter leading face, on which exothermic decomposition of the hydrocarbon occurs, to the cooler trailing faces, at which carbon is deposited from solution. Excess carbon buildup occurs at the exposed particle face and is transported by surface diffusion around the peripheral surfaces of the particle to form an outer skin on the filament. [Pg.3]

The Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT) was developed as an alternative, physiologically based test of sleepiness (1). The test was designed for use with patients whose sleepiness during the day might adversely affect performance or safety. Reasoning on the basis of face validity, a person who has little difficulty with falling asleep inappropriately should be able to stay awake in a quiet, sedentary situation such as during MWT trails.
