A new standard test method is clearly required that will accommodate 0x0-biodegradable plastics and satisfy environmentalists that these materials are fully biocompatible. The British Standards Institution (BSi PKW/0 Packaging and the Environment ) and ASTM (D 20.96) are currently developing alternative mineralisation proeesses for oxo-biodegradable plastics that incorporate controlled pre-ageing processes before the mineralisation test. The protocol shown in Fig. 12.5 outlines the BSi twin-track route to mineralisation. Key features of the test method are as follows. 

Carriers and the chemical industry are working together to improve transportation safety. The American Association of Railroads has agreed to designate routes that handle 10,000 loads per year or more of chemicals as Key Routes." Routes designated as Key Routes will receive upgraded track, enhanced equipment to detect flaws in equipment or in trackage, and lower speed limits.

During catabolic and anabolic processes, a renovation of the molecular cellular components takes place. It should be emphasized that the catabolic and anabolic pathways are independent of each other. Be these pathways coincident and differing in the cycle direction only, the metabolism would have been side-tracked to the so-called useless, or futile, cycles. Such cycles arise in pathology, where a useless turnover of metabolites may occur. To avoid this undesirable contingency, the synthetic and degradative routes in the cell are most commonly separated in space. For example, the oxidation of fatty acids occurs in the mitochondria, while the synthesis thereof proceeds extramitochondrially, in the microsomes.

Another potential exposure route for children is through exposure to clothing and tracked-in dirt brought in by parents who work in factories that produce 3,3 -dichlorobenzidine. A public health assessment study conducted in Michigan in 1981 (ATSDR 1996) foimd the compoimd in the homes of 9 employees. Samples collected from vacuum cleaner bags had up to 10.5 ppm and dryer lint contained up to 0.74 ppm. If these homes have not been adequately cleaned, exposure could continue.

In 1988-89 regulations were loosened with respect to drugs proposed for the treatment of AIDS-related illnesses so that new drugs could be prescribed before all of the extensive testing was finished. This is referred to as the "fast" or "parallel track". 

The Roundtable has undertaken two rounds of benchmarking the routes of manufacture used by its members to prepare APIs. This exercise shows areas where improvements can be made and provides metrics for tracking improvement in the future. In 2009 a Roundtable sub-group started a project to influence solvent manufacturers to produce greener solvents.
