Tracking Mars

Much effort is required, and your temper could flare out of control. [Pg.236]

Mars opposite Neptune Vivid dreams and artistic inspiration characterize this transit. But your efforts to get something done in the workaday world could go awry. You may feel taken advantage of, confused, or out of the loop. [Pg.237]

Mars conjunct Pluto Your attempts to pursue your ambitions and express your personal power in interactions with others receive a boost. [Pg.237]

Mars opposite Pluto In your desire to establish yourself, you run the risk of stumbling into power struggles. [Pg.237]

Mars transits are energizing. When Mars is traveling through a house, you find the energy to take action in that area. You benefit from taking a courageous approach. [Pg.237]

The desorption laser can be tracked across the surface of the meteorite so the plume of molecules can be associated directly with internal structures and morphology on the meteorite surface. The internal morphology of a meteorite is accessed by cleaving the sample in an ultraclean environment to prevent terrestrial contamination, followed by the laser desorption analysis. Nearly all meteorites have been studied in this way producing a mature field of research, however, the details of just two meteorites will be discussed in some detail. The Murchison and ALH84001 meteorites have provoked considerable interest, particularly the Antarctic meteorite ALH84001, which was the subject of a NASA announcement regarding life on Mars. [Pg.170]

On and on I droned. Three so-called Mars generators (modified Venturi aircraft jets) would disseminate streams of BZ in the general direction of the trailer truck. To deal with vagaries in the wind patterns, the truck would move forward or backward along the circle as required to track the cloud. Upon reaching the desired dose the volunteers and booth occupants, all still wearing ftrll protective clothing, would jump into a pickup truck and race across the sandy terrain back to where we had started. [Pg.143]

Figure 7. Locations of Warm Core Rings 82-B and 82-H during 1982 (15). The dashed line indicates the path of motion of the center of 82-B over time (provided by Don Olsen, Univ. of Miami, Rosensteil School for Mar. and Atmos. Sciences). The solid line indicates the path followed by a satellite tracked drifter released in the center of 82-B in August. This drifter stayed with the ring until the ring was reabsorbed by the Gulf Stream. It was then swept into the Gulf Stream and was transported rapidly to the area of formation of Ring 82-H by late September 1982. Figure 7. Locations of Warm Core Rings 82-B and 82-H during 1982 (15). The other two geniuses that Alice met, by the way, were Pablo Picasso and the philosopher Alfred North Whitehead. Personally, I never doubted that Alice might have responded to Picasso, who clearly had a way with women. But Alfred North Whitehead I wasn t so sure. So I tracked down his birthday, and guess what Whitehead s Venus in Aquarius was conjunct Alice s Mars, and his Pluto in Taurus was exactly conjunct her Venus. I m certain that when they met something within her rang. [Pg.230]

Minute differences in alignment of adjacent conveyor slats results in belt marks which mar the appearance of the finished panel. This is in spite of all the care possible to build a precision conveyor. Even though the difference is only several thousandths of an inch, reflected light shows up the slat marks very distinctly. This condition worsens as rolls and tracks wear. [Pg.554]

Meteorites, which come mainly from various asteroids but also from Mars and our Moon, provide otherwise unobtainable information about objects in the inner Solar System in both space and time. The presence of meteorites on Earth allows application of the full gamut of instrumentation able to analyze materials from the asteroids (minor planets). Mars and the Moon with state of the art sensitivity and accuracy. Many meteorites include material that condensed and accreted in the primitive Solar nebula and were subsequently unaltered some contain evidence for pre-Solar nuclear processes. Information in meteorites tracks the evolution of their parent bodies, both interiors and surfaces, the impacts that ejected them and the nuclear radiation history that occurred as they travelled Earthward. Meteoritic material also allows the dating of all of these episodes and determination of the composition of the Sun s surface and the particles streaming from it. This chapter is a brief tutorial outlining this information and indicating how it is obtained. [Pg.153]

Why do scientists wony about units The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) recently was reminded of just why keeping track of units is so important. In 1999 a 125 million satellite was lost in the atmosphere of Mars because scientists made some improper assumptions about units. NASA s scientists at the Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) in Pasadena, California, received thrust data from the satellite s manufacturer, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics in Denver, Colorado. Unfortunately, the Denver scientists used American units in their measurements and the JPL scientists assumed the units were metric. This mistake caused the sateUite to fall 100 km lower into the Mars atmosphere than planned. The spacecraft burned up from the friction with the atmosphere. [Pg.27]

In Mars exploration-related research within the United States government, NASA maintains close ties with many Defense Department units, including the Naval Research Lab but particularly Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the U.S. Army, whose work involving tracked vehicles and robotics have paralleled JPL s work with rovers. [Pg.118]
