The topographical studies of the oxide surface with the aid of optical and electron microscopes have shown the necessity for understanding the several types of oxidation which take dace on any one face. The nature of these processes, such as incubation and growth of nuclei of several types and the growth of the base film, seem to vary with die face exposed, as well as with other factors. The optical and electron microscopic examinations of oxide surfaces have shown clearly the limitations of rate or epitaxial studies alone for fully elucidating the oxidation process. [Pg.515]

White beam synchrotron radiation was used in a topographical study [64] of the phase transition in [Ni(en)2 (NCS)2J single crystals. The short exposure times possible using this intense radiation enabled the strained centre of the crystal to be identified as the most imperfect zone, within which the nucleation and growth process was initiated. The phase transition commenced at defect sites. The role of generation and relaxation of mechanical stresses in influencing kinetics of solid state transformations was later reviewed [65]. [Pg.515]

The earlier conclusions agree with the data from topographic studies of carbonized silica surface by microscopic methods (Gierak and Leboda 1989). The studies carried out succeeded in showing that at low carbonization of the surface, carbon occurs in the form of weakly developed carbon globules which form a mosaic structure on the silica surface. [Pg.544]
