Changes in the FT-Raman spectmm of 1,4-bis(3-quinolyl)buta-l,3-diyne as a function of gamma-ray dosage are used to monitor the degree of monomer to polymer conversion in a solid-state topochemical polymerisation reaction (i.e., polymerisation directed by the solid-state structure) (315). 

In view of the results obtained up to the present time, there seems little chance of succeeding with a topochemical polymerisation of micellar systems. Micellar polymerisation is nevertheless a specific process which promises some useful applications. As an example, it makes possible a radical polymerisation of low reactivity monomers (e.g., sodium undecanoate). It can also produce high molecular weight polymers. 

Topochemical effect. This is a consequence of the organisation of surfactant molecules induced by the micellar state. Although micelles are relatively labile aggregates and less organised than vesicles, topochemical effects may nevertheless influence the polymerisation process. 

Since the polymerisation of diacetylenes is topochemical, it is to be expected that the polymerisation kinetics will depend strongly on the molecular packing. Unfortunately, there is as yet insufficient data available to make any correlations.
