Processed foods may not contain more than the published tolerance allowed for the raw commodity. The tolerance allowed on mass of ingredients is fairly tight at 1% generally but down to 0.02g for sulphur and accelerators. For miniature internal mixers this reduces even further to 0.002g. There are limits on the difference between the sum of the masses of the ingredients and the final mass of the mixed batch of between + 0.5% and - 1.5%. Carbon black is required to be conditioned before use to remove moisture but it seems curious that this is not required for other fillers. 

Functional tolerance is a significant factor for the success of directed evoluiton. A protein that is functionally tolerant allows many mutations without disrupting the fitness, making it more likely that there is a connected path in sequence space of single mutations that leads to regions of higher fitness. Tolerance also affects the quality of the mutant library. If the protein is functionally intolerant, the mutant library will consist of mostly inactive proteins. 

Another important factor with regard to adherends is the uniformity and tolerances allowed in the joint fit-up. Improper tolerances on the geometry of the joint can lead to adhesive-starved areas or areas where the bond is so thick that unwanted peel and cleavage forces can easily develop.
