Figure 15. Effect of shear during cross-linking of fast-reacting titanate crosslinker. Viscosity values measured at 170 s are shown for gels exposed to various shear histories. It takes approximately 20 min to reach the final temperature of 80 °C. Increasing time at high shear rates (675 s ) decreases the viscosity, and increasing the shear rate 1350 s vs. 675 s ) decreases the... Figure 15. As a result of some anomalous events, the Milstar satellite was placed in an incorrect and unusable low elliptical final orbit, as opposed to the intended geosynchronous orbit. Media interest was high because this mishap was the third straight Titan IV failure and because there had been recent failures of other commercial space launches. In addition, this accident is believed to be one of the most costly unmanned losses in the history of Cape Canaveral Launch Operations. The Milstar satellite cost about 800 milUon, and the launcher an additional 433 million. [Pg.469]

But this titanic task was fulfilled in 1968. A group of American scientists including the discoverer of natural technetium P. Kuroda managed to find the natural promethium isotope with a mass number of 147 in a specimen of uranium ore (pitchblende). This was the final step in the fascinating history of the discovery of element 61. [Pg.216]

Instead of an introductory chapter that presents a mass of text about the history of electronics, or its importance in modern life, this chapter will start right in with experiments illustrating the "inductive kick" that sometimes destroys expensive computers. These experiments also include making a simple radio transmitter of the type that saved 600 people on the ship Titanic. [Pg.4]

Pollack et al. (1976) shov hov/ the calculated contraction history is consistent vnth the knov/n properties of the rings and satellites. In particular, the nethane-rich atmosphere of Titan correlates vn th their calculation that it is the innermost satellite where methane-containing ico could condense. The low densities and extensive surface ice on the other satellites and ring particles are also consistent with their predictions. [Pg.118]

Some very questionable results were obtained. One of the more interesting results was the fact that tumors were not confined to the pleural cavity, but developed at sites far removed from the trachea and lungs in many cases. Three substances tested that have a long history of causing tumors in animals were amosite, crocidolite, and potassium titanate. The amphibole crocidolite and potassium titanate showed no tumors, while amosite and fiber glass ranked as the least suspect The results were as presented below. They contradict almost all studies published and the results with respect to phosphate fibers cannot be accepted as reliable ... [Pg.206]
