Soret and Delafontaine identified holmium in 1878 by examination of its spectrum. The following year, Cleve separated its oxide from Marignac s erbia, a mixture of erbium, holmium and thulium oxides. He named this element Holmium, after his native town Holmia (Stockholm). The metal was produced in 1934 by Klemm and Bommer. 

Because it is so rare, thulium is also very expensive. In 2007, thulium oxide sold for approximately 2,500 per kilogram. 

Thulium is a silver-grey metal with a bright luster. Swedish chemist Per Theodor Cleve discovered the metal in 1879 while processing the ore er-bia. One of the materials Cleve extracted from the ore was a green substance he named thulia —a thulium oxide. The element s name is derived from an ancient name for northern Europe, Thule. 

The most common isotope of thulium is Tm, which has a natural abundance of 100 percent and is the only stable isotope. Other isotopes range from Tm to Tm and have half-lives ranging from 0.36 milliseconds ( Tm) to 1.92 years ( Tm). Examples of thuhum compounds include thulium iodide (Tmlj), thulium fluoride (TmFj), and thulium oxide (Tm203).
