Throwing Sticks

The throwing stick is by no means a toy. It has a range up to 500 ft., and the power is sufficient to inflict serious injuries. Use the same precautions as with ardiery. Be especially sure to have plenty of room when you first try out the sport. An archery target is the most convenient to use, but any type of target in which the arrows will stick may be used. [Pg.76]

ILLUSTRATIONS With a forceful flick of her abdomen, a stick insect throws an egg several meters at an initial speed of about 3 meters (10 feet) per second. [Pg.34]

And now for the vapour-bath. On a framework made up of three sticks, meeting at the top, they stretch pieces of woollen cloth, taking care to get the jams as perfect as they can, and inside this little tent, they place a dish with red-hot stones on it. They then take some hemp seed, enter the tent and throw the seed onto the hot stones. [Pg.325]

The rims of the wheels are fitted with eyelets to accept rockets whose sticks are supported by the lower wheel. These are matched to fire at intervals as the wheels revolve, while a battery of Roman candles fires from the centre of the top wheel. Both wheels are fitted with gerbs and drivers to effect rotation, the complete device being appropriately matched such that the overall effect includes two revolving circles of fire, each throwing out glittering arrays of sparks, while candle stars emanate from the centre and rockets fly off vertically. [Pg.122]

Rotary wheel atomizers require 0.8 to 1.0 kWh/1000 L. The lateral throw of a spray wheel requires a large diameter to prevent accumulation on the wall the ratio of length to diameter of 0.5 to 1.0 is in use in such cases. The downward throw of spray nozzles permits smaller diameters but greater depths LID ratios of 4 to 5 or more are used. Spray vessel diameters of 15 m (50 ft) or more are known. Liquid/gas ratios are 0.2 to 0.3 gal/MSCF. Flue gas enters at 149°C (300°F) at a velocity of 2.44 m/s (8 ft/s). Utilization of 80 percent of the solid reagent may be approached. Residence times are 10 to 12 s. At the outlet the particles are made just dry enough to keep from sticking to the wall, and the gas is within 11 to 28°C (20 to 50°F) of saturation. The fine powder is recovered with fabric filters. In one test facility, a gas with 4000 ppm S02 had 95 percent removal with lime and 75 percent removal with limestone. [Pg.47]

To Eat Burning Coals.—In the first place make a good charcoal fire in the furnace. Just before commencing the act throw in three or four pieces of soft pine. When burnt to a coal one cannot tell the difference between this and charcoal, except by sticking a fork into it. This will not burn in the least, while the genuine charcoal will. You can stick... [Pg.54]

The second technique is to exaggerate the way a word is spelled, the way it sounds, or some part of the word. The English language has hundreds of words that are not spelled the way they sound, with silent letters and letter combinations throwing even the best spellers for a loop. But, exaggerating these idiosyncrasies can make the spelling stick in your mind. [Pg.33]

The powers that be at ICI acknowledged Joe s election to the Royal Society by throwing a banquet at their Millbank headquarters on the Thames, near the Houses of Parliament, and we and our wives all trooped down to celebrate. No expense was spared, and even the beer drinkers amongst us remarked on the quality of the wines served. Joe was not ICI s favourite son, but they were in a cleft stick and they did what was expected of them. True, the Main Board Research Director of the day, a lugubrious and inscrutable Scotsman, in a speech notable for the delicacy with which he placed his feet, did describe Joe as a complex character . One had the suspicion that no double-entendre was meant. [Pg.23]

The same authority tells how to make a cheapex rest, by tying three moderately stout sticks together near the top, and then throwing out the other ends upon the ground after the raanuer of the feet of a tripod. Place your coat in the crotch formed at the top to rest your rifle upon—tbat is all there Is of it... [Pg.393]
